Food: Mainly grass seeds, which they pick from the spikes or find on the ground. Like all other estrilda they vary their menu by also including insects. Especially when they are raising their young, insects are an important food source.

Outside the breeding season these birds are observed in small or in large flocks. During the breeding season they separate into pairs, displaying territorial behaviour.
