Food: Grass seeds are the staple food. They also eat other small seeds, and limited amounts of small insects now and then. They find most of their food by rummaging about on the ground.
They are usually found in pairs, sometimes in small family groups. Occasionally seen looking for food in the company of firefinches. When the young have moulted, they are supposed to find their own way. The young will often flock together for a while, until after some time they occupy a territory of their own.
